As I strolled through the charming streets of Como city, I quickly realized there’s so much more to this place than just being a gateway to Lake Como.
The things to do in Como city itself offer a unique experience that’s distinct from the famous lake’s attractions.
From its stunning architecture to its plentiful shops and restaurants, Como surprised me at every turn.
Having spent a couple of days in this compact Italian gem, I’m excited to share my favourite discoveries with you. Let me take you on a journey through the heart of this often-overlooked destination.

Is Como Worth Visiting?

After spending time in Como, I can confidently say it’s a place that offers a unique blend of experiences. While it may not have the same dreamy allure as Lake Como towns, it’s not without its own charm.
I found the city’s energy a welcome change returning from the ferry after visiting the sought-after towns of Bellagio and Varenna. The streets are wider and busier. I see locals mixed with tourists going about their daily routine.
However, it’s important to note that Como can get crowded, especially during peak seasons, and prices tend to be on the higher side, well that can be said for all of Lake Como.
The city serves as a great base for exploring the region, with easy access to Milan and Lugano. But it lacks the intimate, retreat-like atmosphere of other Lake Como villages.
In my experience, Como is worth visiting if you’re looking for a more urban Italian experience with the lake as a backdrop. It makes for a great base to explore the area due to its transportation hub of train, bus and ferry stations.
But it might not be the ideal choice if you’re seeking a quiet, romantic getaway. While Como offers plenty to see, it’s not the place if you’re hoping to open your windows and enjoy a stunning view from your room. That said, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Best Things to Do in Como City

Here’s my curated list of must-see attractions and hidden gems. Most of these I found particularly enjoyable, but there are a few that I knew about, but just didn’t have time to experience them myself. What is missing from this list is spending a day in Lake Como towns.
Como Things to Do

- Ride the Como-Brunate Funicular: I loved the panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains from this scenic railway.

- Visit the Tempio Voltiano: A museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta gives you insight into the inventor’s work, and his greatest achievement, the electric battery.
- Visit the Silk Museum: Learn about Como’s silk-making heritage.
- Shop for silk: Como’s long silk industry history is evident in its boutiques, where there is no shortage of beautiful silk products.
- Admire some art at Galleria Ramo: I popped into this small art gallery of mostly modern contemporary pieces.
- Take a boat tour on Lake Como: Take a private boat tour with a small group for a more intimate experience of seeing the lake while sipping on champagne.
- Join the Italian tradition: I enjoyed an aperitivo at Hemingway’s Bar located near the waterfront.
- Enjoy a leisurely meal: I recommend going to La Pasta Taverna for fresh homemade pasta, or Bistrot Muralto.
Things to See in Como
- Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como): The beautiful Gothic and Renaissance architecture is stunning, as is the Piazza del Duomo, the large square the church sits on.
- Piazza Guido Grimoldi: A long, narrow square home to a beautiful clock tower.
- Antico Quartier Cortesella: A medieval neighbourhood called Isola was demolished in the 1930s leaving only remnants of the ancient church of S.Nazario and S.Celso, a few medieval houses, and some characteristic alleys as reminders of its existence.
- Il Filo della Memoria: An interesting mural (up on the side of a building) that is a memorial to remember the demolished Isola neighbourhood.
- Madonna con Bambino: A Dante quote inscribed high on a building facade, features a poetic verse celebrating a woman’s greatness by being a mother.
- Piazza Alessandro Volta: A large public square with a statue of the inventor himself, but it was the architecture that I liked most.

- Palazzo Broletto: A medieval Town Hall, built in 1215, with a distinctive facade featuring alternating bands of gray, white, and red marble.
- Teatro Sociale: A Neoclassical theatre from 1813 with an elegant facade.
- Basilica di San Fedele: I found this Romanesque church in Piazza San Fedele to be a hidden architectural gem.
- Piazza Cavour: I enjoyed people-watching and soaking in the lively vibes of Como’s main square.
- Life Electric sculpture: This modern artwork on the lakefront, inspired by Volta’s electric battery is a cool find.
- Porta Torre: An impressive 34-meter-high fortress from 1192 from Como’s medieval past.
Final Thoughts
After exploring Como’s charming streets and historic sites, I’ve discovered it’s much more than just a transit point for Lake Como.
While the city serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region, it deserves attention in its own right.
Take time to wander its medieval alleys, admire the stunning architecture, and soak in the local culture. The city offers a perfect blend of history, art, and modern Italian life.
Whether you’re using Como as a launching pad for day trips to nearby towns, Milan, or Swiss cities, or simply enjoying its own unique character, make sure to pause and appreciate the city itself.
Linger in its beautiful piazzas, enjoy an aperitivo, explore the Duomo, and let the city’s rhythm steal your heart.
Como isn’t just a stopover – it’s a destination that rewards those who take the time to truly experience it.
