Best Area to Stay in Lake Como for Your Next Trip

When I started planning my trip to Lake Como, one of my first questions was, “What’s the best area to stay in Lake Como?”

After researching and talking to others who’ve been there, I quickly realized there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Each area around the lake has its own charm and offers something unique, whether you’re drawn to the lively vibe of Bellagio, the quiet, romantic elegance of Varenna, or the convenience of Como City.

I spent hours debating between a few standout properties that perfectly matched my travel style—spoiler: I’ll share those options with you later. Ultimately, I stayed in a quaint spot that gave me easy access to ferry connections and advocated for that slow living, boutique style that I adore.

If you’re planning your visit and trying to narrow down where to stay in Lake Como Italy, let me walk you through the areas and places I loved most and recommend.

Best Towns to Stay in Lake Como

When deciding on the best places to stay on Lake Como, I’d say you can’t go wrong with the central lake area.

Towns like Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Tremezzo are perfectly positioned to explore the lake, thanks to convenient ferry connections and a relaxed pace that’s ideal for soaking in the scenery.

Bellagio is a classic choice, with its picturesque streets and plenty of hotel and dining options. Next, I’d recommend Varenna for those seeking a quieter, more romantic vibe and some incredible views.

Menaggio, on the western shore, would be my next choice and it’s great if you want a slightly less touristy feel but still want easy access to the lake. Lastly, Tremezzo, with its grand villas and waterfront promenade, has its own understated charm but is just a bit further away from the golden triangle of Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio.

I stayed in Como City as the best town to stay in Lake Como for a short visit—especially if you’re arriving late or have an early departure back to Milan or beyond. But I wouldn’t recommend it for a longer stay. Como City is an hour’s bus ride to the golden triangle or a 1.5 to 2-hour ferry ride, and you don’t want to be doing that every day to see the other towns.

The central lake towns are ideal, especially if you have three days or more in Lake Como.

Best Area to Stay in Lake Como

To maximize your time in Lake Como, I recommend you stay in Como City when exploring this area for a day or two, and I also recommend the below as the best place to stay in Lake Como.

Best Place to Stay on Lake Como

I had the pleasure of staying at Alessia’s Place, a beautifully renovated old house in the heart of Como that perfectly blends the luxury of a hotel with the warmth and comfort of an apartment.

The details in this place were incredible—the old brass taps, refined stuccowork, and ancient wardrobes made every corner feel special. The thick, traditional walls kept the space quiet and cozy. I loved the pretty tea set left with local Italian candies piled high in a crystal dish too.

My room was ultra-feminine, with a terrace overlooking the inner courtyard, and the whole building, located steps from Piazza Volta, was surrounded by charming shops and local cafés—perfect for experiencing Como City.

My host, Yaiza, was exceptional. She reached out days before my arrival, informed me about a potential train strike, and even offered early check-in when my room wasn’t quite ready. She treated me like a friend, acting as my personal concierge by sharing tips on getting to Bellagio and Varenna, recommending local restaurants, and more.

I highly recommend staying at Alessia’s Place, and if and when I return, I will stay here again.

Final Thoughts

For me, where I stay when I travel greatly impacts my memories of a destination, for the good and the bad. Reflecting on my month-long trip to Italy where I visited so many destinations in northern Italy, and Lake Como combined with my stay at Alessia’s Place holds a special memory for me.

Beyond the charming accommodation and picturesque views, what stood out the most was the authentic connection with the places I stayed and the people I met, especially my host, Yaiza.

This personal touch made all the difference in crafting a truly memorable stay. Lake Como is so much more than a destination; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in a slower pace of life, where every meal is savoured, and every moment counts.
