When people ask me what to do in Berlin on a Sunday, I always smile. Sundays in Berlin move at a different pace. And, it easily becomes one of the most beautiful days of the week once you know what to expect and plan ahead.
I learned this while living here.
Sundays are quiet days, and I mean that literally. It’s a day to visit a park, take a long walk through a favourite neighbourhood, stop at a flea market, and enjoy a long brunch.
Most shops are closed, but museums welcome wanderers.
Let me share how I ritually spent my Sundays wandering, eating, and enjoying a relaxing day. The local way. Experiencing Berlin on a Sunday is the perfect place to understand why I love this city so much.

What to Do in Berlin on a Sunday: My Local Perspective

Most shops in Germany close on Sundays. It’s intentional. A protected day of rest woven into the culture.
There is a word for it, Sonntagsruhe. Literally means “Sunday quiet.” It refers to the calm, protected stillness of Sundays in Germany. You’ll hear it used to describe the cultural expectation that life slows down—shops close, noise softens, and people rest.
But Sunday doesn’t mean the city stops. It simply shifts. Many places still open their doors. These businesses can open on Sundays, which some choose to do (a select few in the neighbourhoods).
- Shops in train stations, airports and bus terminals
- Tourist attractions and souvenir shops, including most shopping near Alexanderplatz
- Restaurants and food delivery
- Petrol stations
- Pharmacies (Apotheken)
- Spatis (similar to a convenience store)
- Bakeries
- Flea markets and art markets
- Museums

Outdoor Sunday Activities in Berlin
Enjoy Nature in Grunewald or Brandenburg Lakes
Berliners love to escape the city centre and head to Grunewald Forest or Brandenburg Lakes. This sprawling woodland and lakes are where locals love to walk, bike, swim or hike.
Where to Go for a Stroll

Walk and take in the many outdoor monuments, like the Holocaust Memorial, or walk along the East Side Gallery to see its art murals.
Oftentimes on a Sunday, I would walk or rent a bike and go to the Berliner Mauerweg, a 160 km path tracing the former route of the Berlin Wall. This long stretch is where you’ll pass by remnants of the wall, watchtowers, and informative exhibits.
Take a self-guided walking tour along Berlin’s most famous street, Unter den Linden Boulevard
Many locals visit the grounds of Charlottenburg Palace for its beautiful gardens
Take a scenic boat tour and admire the city’s architecture

Final Thoughts
Sundays in Berlin invite you to explore the city differently. The pace slows. And when you let yourself fall into that rhythm, you start to see Berlin the way locals do—unhurried, observant, and present. This is the heart of slow travel here. It’s not about checking off sights. It’s about taking your time throughout the day.
These small moments reveal the soul of the city far more than any itinerary ever will.
If you’d like support planning a trip that reflects this way of travelling—calm, thoughtful, and deeply experiential—I can help. My trip planning services are designed to bring you into Berlin’s local gems, not just its landmarks. When you’re ready to see Berlin through that lens, I’d love to guide you.
